The Process: How Hot Bending and Curved Tempering Work
Hot bending glass (also called bent annealed glass) is produced by heating flat glass to its softening point (~600°C) and then forming it into the desired radius using a mold or gravity. The glass is then allowed to cool slowly in an annealing process. This preserves the visual clarity and surface smoothness of annealed glass, enabling very tight radii and complex multi-curve geometries. However, the resulting glass retains the mechanical strength of ordinary annealed glass — roughly 40 MPa.
Curved tempered glass follows a different path. After heating, the glass is bent into shape and then immediately subjected to rapid air quenching. This creates a surface compression layer that dramatically increases strength to approximately 200 MPa — five times that of annealed glass. Curved tempered glass is classified as safety glass: when broken, it shatters into small, relatively harmless granules rather than dangerous shards. This is why most international safety standards (EN 12150, ASTM C1048, AS/NZS 2208) require tempered glass for commercial refrigeration and appliance applications.
